interview with Tanchevski

ind.o.g: Gable Clark’s mustache is your trade mark for parties is it?

Tanchevski: Oh no, not at all, Gable Clark’s mustache is my trade mark only for home and for visiting guests.

ind.o.g: You have been a dj for over 7 years, which musical styles have you played up until now?

Tanchevski: I am yet to personally experiment with music. I first started to buy and play house music, after a while it was tech-house, then it was techno. Throughout out that time I would select the records which I actually personally liked, and which I thought would be great to play out at a club. Over the last year and a half I have been predominantly listening to minimal.

ind.o.g: Minimal is an outstanding and intelligent musical form. Do you think the people of our city are ready to listen to minimal and other music which requires brain power?

Tanchevski: That's all a matter of style. There are people that listen to electronic music, yet they can't listen to minimal. They just can't become accustomed to it. That doesn't mean that their brain cells aren't working. You can't awaken the brain cells of people who sit in front of the television and radio and listen to Serbian and Bulgarian turbo electro techno and goodness knows what sort of folk.

ind.o.g: For how long have you been involved in production?

Tanchevski: I've been playing around with Reason for approximately four years on a recreational level, but more seriously now for about a year. I can honestly say that I'm getting further involved with production as there are still so many little things that I need to learn about.

ind.o.g: Your remix of Gwen Stefani is a definite hit! Have you tried to send it out to any particular labels?

Tanchevski: No, nor do I plan to send it to any. I made the bootleg as a bit of a joke, from not having anything more intelligent to work on. If do eventually want to send it to a label, I would have to sit down and start the track from the beginning and work on it properly as the production is not the best. It’s boring, I tell you.

ind.o.g: Have you thought about making a remix for Macedonia’s Jimmy Hendrix - Kango? I know that you are a big fan of his. Hahaha.

Tanchevski: For Kango??? Anything!!! Yes I am a fan, and one of his bigger ones. I go to his concerts regularly, I listen to his songs attentively, I know the lyrics off by heart. What sort of a question is that??? Lunatic!

ind.o.g: Do any of our quality dj’s get much work ?

Tanchevski: Club owners only work with them to a minimal extent, in other words so that they don’t go without having an empty club. They don't pay attention to how they should work with them on a professional level, nor do they take into account what they are honestly worth. The club owners and promoters are always bargaining to get the cheapest price from the dj’s. That's why you'll see quasi-dj’s playing free of charge before dj’s like Tiefschwarz and Terry Francis. The Bulgarian dj’s are residents in the clubs of Skopje! Ridiculous!

ind.o.g: Is there any particular label that you particularly like at the moment?

Tanchevski: There's plenty of great music around at the moment, so much so that I can't single out any specific label.

ind.o.g: You organised a couple of 'Wake Up' parties with Goran Kan last month. Why haven’t you continued with the 'Wake Up' series?

Tanchevski: The concept behind the 'Wake Up' parties was to have two Macedonian dj’s playing at Colloseum every Sunday, but in my opinion, it didn't continue because of the day we chose to run it. People tend to start going out on a Thursday, then you have two parties on Friday and Saturday which is the norm. It's only logical that they choose to stay home and recover on Sunday. Financially, they may not be able to sustain going out four nights a week.

ind.o.g: Do you think it’s about time our people wake up and revive our scene?

Tanchevski: There has been some positive vibrations through 'Wake Up' in livening up our scene, however I don't think that they will be able to achieve this individually. This isn’t because the scene is dead and doesn’t have a chance to revive, but it will require a greater number of people to be re-organised in order for the scene to function properly.
