This year at the end of September, we have visited one of the greatest festivals for electronic music and contemporary art in the Balkans. It is called Reworks Festival, and this year it was the second edition. The first impression from the festival was surprisingly interesting since the surroundings of the festival were composed out of abandoned railway station buildings and wagons. Furthermore the location of this place is addressed to the name of Mylos, situated in the city of Thessaloniki.
The Reworks festival presents a great mixture of audio and visuals, furthermore this concept brought up an excellent vibe since it had an outstanding combination of quality modern electronic music and artists presenting their work through galleries and installations. In addition to the general outlook of the Reworks Festival, it is good to mention that there were different stages placed all around the building complex of Mylos.
The names of the stages were somehow matched with the style of the music presented in a particular building, hence it was not that difficult to spot the names which were in this order; Remake Stage, Rebuilt Stage, Reprocess Stage, Reconstruct Stage, and Atrium. Mainly these stages followed the concept of music presentation in form of live acts and dj sets, how ever there were 3 rooms reserved for presentation of visuals and arts. All of the specific locations as mentioned before tend to present a particular concept which can be better described as this:
Remake Stage:
This was actually the biggest of all stages that were in the festival and the idea behind this stage, is to host big room entertainment with various music styles from ambient and house and tech-house to techno and electro.
Rebuilt Stage:
It is good to notice that this stage presented music under the concept of an open air stage, which was one out of the two open air stages, further more this stage was devoted to the presentation of minimal and techno music and pays a tribute to the music school of Cologne by presenting 3 artists amongst which the natural leader of Kompakt, Michael Mayer.
Reprocess Stage:
Mainly keeps the concept of presenting fresh and contemporary music from all over the world, and giving a chance to some artist to present their through live acts to various DJ sets.
Reconstruct Stage:
It may be the fact that this was the smallest stage from all of the festival stages, however the range, and the pace of the music presented tended to push the limits as far as it can. From various new age contemporary music, to massive avant-garde electronic sounds and beats.
Atrium:
When it comes to the concept of an open air stage, this was the biggest one. In addition to its concept the music presented here was a broad specter of various flavors starting from nu school breakz, freestyle, soul, jazz and etc.
The second edition of this festival`s concept was the presentation of the contemporary art from various artists through their work in form of video presentations, special acts, wide range of projects, paintings and exhibitions.
Gallery B:
A place where the most extravagant and controvert Greek artist Konstantions Rigos reveals his breath-taking project done especially for the Reworks Festival.
Dark Room:
A place where the audience was able to enjoy a presentation composed of digitally processed movies, from various domestic and foreign artists.
Gallery A:
The goal of this gallery was to present various paintings and other forms of art with a contemporary character from various artists.
Our musical journey through the Reworks festival was outstanding and the reason for this feel we pass it on to the organizers of this festival which is the NON collective. Furthermore when it comes to the various aspects that one festival must fulfill, all of them were covered in excellent manner. It gives us a particular pleasure to see that the organization proved successful in editions of the Reworks Festival 2005 and 2006.
Apart from these activities that the NON collective proved to be fully grown for them, the unique selection of the music artist, it was more than noticeable that this was a classy blend of different electronic music genres. One of the reasons for such statement is derived from the line up that the Reworks Festival had, in addition to this text we would like to present it in the following order: Dr Lektroluv , Gebr Tachmann , MANDY , Rob Luis , Stratos , Bano , Undo , ADA , And.Id , Anders Liar , Anthony Rother , Modeselektor , Popnebo , Sleeparchive, and surprisingly large number of local DJs from Thessaloniki.
In addition to this wonderful line up presented in this festival, we would like also to stress the appearance of Dj Flooder, which was representative of our country. According to the time table and the festival`s map, he was supposed to play at the Reconstruct Stage, right after Sleeparchive. His DJ set was announced to be a techno oriented one, however Flooder has surprised the audience presenting a different style of music, this time the choice was made for the minimal music.
Despite the fact that there were other DJs playing at the same time, Flooder managed to capture the attention of the audience with the music presented. All in all his appearance was a good thing to see and hear, since he tended to present himself in a unique way, being a part of that event certainly was a great experience.
